Dr. Cedric Dzidzor Amengor is a Lecturer at the Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry and currently the Vocational Training co-ordinator for the School of Pharmacy, UHAS.
Education
Dr. Cedric Dzidzor Amengor is an alumnus of Koforidua Secondary Technical School (KSTS, Ghana)-E/R where he graduated in 2005. Cedric studied Pharmacy at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Ghana obtaining his BPharm. (Second Class Honours) in 2011 and MPhil in 2014, the latter under the supervision and mentorship of Professor Reimmel Adosraku and Dr. William Kofie where he worked on the synthesis of azo compounds with antimicrobial potentials and acid-base indicator properties. He obtained his Ph.D from the same University in 2018 sponsored by Commonwealth Scholarship Scheme on a split-site mode in collaboration with the University of Greenwich on an Associate Postgraduate Science programme. His project was in Click Chemistry which the foundation chemists in this field won the Nobel Peace Prize in Chemistry, 2022). He synthesised 36 novel 1,2,3-triazoles and clicked-tethered phosphonium salts with antileishmanial and antitubercular activities supervised by Prof. Adrian Dobbs (University of Surrey, UK), Prof. Joshua Boateng (University of Greenwich), Dr. Guilia Getti (University of Greenwich), Prof. Isaac Ayensu (KNUST) and Dr. Joseph Adu (KNUST).
Work experience
Dr. Amengor is a Senior Lecturer at the University of Health and Allied Sciences. Cedric teaches and demonstrates Organic Chemistry, Physical Chemistry, Medicinal Chemistry and Analytical Chemistry. He is currently the Head of Department, Pharmaceutical Chemistry.
Research output
In 2016, Dr. Amengor was offered an opportunity to be part of the Next Generation Scientists’ Programme at Novartis, Basel was part of a team which synthesised cavinafungin and its analogues with the aim of hit validation and expansion in determining their antifungal activity and accurate stereochemistry. Cedric was part of a chemistry team awarded a grant on the Royal Society Chemistry Exchange Programme for collaborative research between KNUST and the University of Greenwich with Prof. Adrian Dobbs between 2018-2020). This is where he earned his primary research area is Click chemistry. In 2023, he was offered a placement at the Welcome Centre for Anti-infectives Research, Drug Discovery Unit at the University of Dundee as a Visiting Researcher (an Associate Scientist). The skills developed at Dundee will enhance the training of my undergraduate and postgraduate students in Medicinal Chemistry and help refine drug discovery in Ghana. Moreover, together with colleagues who have had this training and capacity, build a Centre of Excellence for Drug Discovery in Ghana with the purpose of feeding the biologists with novel compounds as targets for malaria, TB and NTDs (Trypanosomiasis and Schistosomiasis. He is has been part of the Ghana Drug Discovery Hub since 2021.
Dr. Amengor welcomes enquiries at any time from potential collaborators regarding current or future projects.
