  • SOP-led team publishes study on treatment of common vaginal infection

A UHAS team, led by Dr. Benjamin K. Harley of the School of Pharmacy (SOP) and Dr. Sayanika Devi Waikhom of the School of Basic and Biomedical Sciences (SBBS) has published a study entitled “Bioactive triterpenoids from Solanum torvum fruits with antifungal, resistance modulatory and anti-biofilm formation activities against fluconazole resistant candida albicans strains.” This output, which was published 28 December 2021 on PlosOne, is a result of collaborative research between faculty from the School of Pharmacy and the School of Basic and Biomedical Sciences.

The work is also part of an ongoing project by the research team to evaluate various traditional herbal preparations used by the Ghanaian populace to treat vulvovaginal candidiasis and identify components/constituents from these traditional herbal preparations that can be developed into safe and affordable medications for use.

The other investigators on the team are Dr. Clement Okraku Tettey, Dr. Cedric Dzidzor Amengor, Dr. Nana Ama Mireku-Gyimah (UG) and Professor Theophilus C. Fleischer. The technical team members are Mr. David Neglo, Mr. Philip Tawiah and Miss Mercy Adansi Pipim.
