Dr. Emmanuel Orman is an early career researcher and academic in the Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry in the School of Pharmacy, University of Health, and Allied Sciences (UHAS).
As an emerging academic, he currently lectures and guides undergraduate pharmacy students in foundation, organic, physical, analytical, and medicinal chemistry courses. As a researcher, he is dedicated to advancing knowledge in the specific area of medicine quality and also generally in pharmaceutical chemistry.
Education
He holds an MPhil in Pharmaceutical Chemistry from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology(KNUST), Kumasi where he also obtained his B. Pharm degree.
His postgraduate training focused on the search for new antiplasmodial bioactive compounds from selected medicinal plants in Ghana, leading to their isolation and chemical modification as part of hit to lead discovery and optimisation. The period of study afforded him the opportunity to be trained in biomedical science research, principles of which were adopted in the thesis.
Work Experience
Dr. Emmanuel Orman has served in different aspect of the Pharmaceutical industry. He has served as a consultant Pharmacist at the manufacturing unit of Salom Pharmacy. Additionally, Emmanuel has served as the head of research and development at the same institution. Prior to these engagements, he was superintendent Pharmacist at various community pharmacies. His teaching and research experience in academia began when he served as a Graduate assistant in the Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry, KNUST.
Science /Research output
Dr. Orman has a peculiar interest in Quality Management Systems (QMS) implemented in Pharmaceutical industries and how these could be improved. On the same QMS, he is currently working on how to incorporate continuous improvement strategies like Kaizen and LSS into the systems to achieve two purposes; to improve upon the systems and also increase productivity. Emmanuel is also adopting effective science-based design method, Analytical Quality by Design (AQbD) with elements of Design of Experiments (DOE), to design, develop and validate analytical methods for Pharmaceutical products (bulk and finished products, raw and intermediate materials), stability studies, dissolution methods and in vitro methods adopted generally in Pharmaceutical and biomedical research (for instance, phytochemical assays, antioxidant assays, etc.).
Another area of focus for his research is Natural Product Chemistry. Specifically, he is interested in creating libraries of isolated bioactive compounds (against different disease conditions) from Ghanaian medicinal plants and using in silico methods to discover hit and lead molecules for further optimisation through Quantitative Structure-Activity Relationship (QSAR) studies.
Dr. Emmanuel Orman intends to, through this research area, discover and develop drug candidates effective against resistant strains of organisms implicated in infectious diseases in the tropics.
