Regina Esinam Abotsi is an Assistant Lecturer at the Department of Pharmaceutical Microbiology at the School of Pharmacy, University of Health and Allied Sciences in Ghana. She is also a registered pharmacist, a member of the Pharmaceutical Society of Ghana and Organisation of Women in Science in Developing Countries. She currently serves as the School of Pharmacy representative on the Vocational Training Committee as well as the Academic Planning and Management committee of UHAS.
Education She read Bachelor of Pharmacy at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology where she graduated with First Class honours in 2012. She carried out her internship at Tema General Hospital and Pharmaceutical Science department of Central University College, Miotso, Ghana. She was awarded a Master of Pharmacy degree (Cum Laude) in Pharmaceutical Microbiology from University of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa in 2016.
Work Experience She practised as a community pharmacist for two years. Prior to her appointment at UHAS, she was the Superintendent Pharmacist at GeoRuth Pharmacy, Mamponteng, Kumasi, Ghana.
Science/research contribution Ms Abotsi’s research interest is in molecular epidemiology of antibiotic resistance, antibiotic stewardship policy formulation and implementation by developing countries, microbial metagenomics and ethnopharmacology of medicinal plants with anti-inflammatory, anti-arthritic and anti-anaphylactic effect. She participated in two desktop analyses on antimicrobial resistance in the WHO AFRO and EMRO regions leading a publication and a report. She has several publications in international peer-reviewed journals, conference presentations as well sequence data in international repositories. She is a recipient of several grants, awards, scholarships and fellowships including The Head of State Award 2004, Louis August Jonas Foundation Scholarship (Country representative in Denmark, 2005), Mwalimu Nyerere African Union Scholarship 2014, UKZN College of Health Science Research grant, KRITH Biostatistics Course Travel Grant 2015 and 2016 from Bill and Melinda Gates foundation and Organisation of Women in Science in Developing Countries PhD Fellowship 2016.
